On April 13th afternoon, WISE held a tea time symposia with the aim of sharing experiences for applying to study in the United States. In the symposia, Chen Tonghui, TA and student work assistant of WISE, master of school of economics at department of international trading; Wu Li, master of WISE for 2005; Liu Tingwen, master of WISE for 2006; Zheng Jingxian, master of 2007 were invited to give a speech for their successful application. They had already successfully got offers and the full scholarships from the universities of United States. The four universities were individually UIUC, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, UIUC, and Cornell University.
Professor Fang Ying, WISE Graduate Direct Committee Associate Director gave a speech in present of WISE at first. He pointed out that this year was the most successful one in the history of applications for economics in the universities of the United States, and students from Xiamen University were quite competitive. It was the abundant seaside academic resources and excellent international academic reputation that helped a lot in the applications for the students and faculty of WISE. And he hoped that each member of WISE should treat WISE family and its reputation as carefully as treat his own eyes. Besides finishing the courses supplied by WISE diligently, all the students should also take part in academic lectures, seminars and conferences, bringing up one’s own academic interests.
It followed that the four students gave the speeches about the preparations of applications, the procedures of applying and the most important factors that helped in the applications, together with what should be paid attentions when applying to study in the United States and their heart feelings when in the process of waiting for the results. Chen Tonghui told something about the importance of recommendations by professors from abroad in applications; Wu Li talked a lot about the resources and brands of WISE as the secret weapon of successful application with the words that “It would not be just a dream when you come to WISE”; Zheng Jingxian emphasized the necessity of studying mathematics and the advantage of having been exchanged to National University of Singapore; and at last, Liu Tingwen advised that it was a good idea to hold a free heart in the whole applications, and wished everyone be successful in applying to study in North America. Finally, the student at present asked some questions that are of their own interest to the four student who had gained offers.
