Singapore Management University (SMU)’s vice President and provost professor Chin Tiong TAN, announced on March27 that SMU signed with the Xiamen University (XMU) in January 2007 that SMU has established a China Capital Market Research Center (CCMRC). The Center will collaborate closely with its counterpart in Xiamen University, the Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE) to become a center of excellence in the understanding and analysis of the capital market development in China. This is based on the memorandum of understanding signed by XMU and SMU in January2007, when XMU president Chongshi ZHU paid a visit to SMU.
The research work of the Center will cover various aspects of the Chinese capital market, including the stock market, the bond market, the private equity market and other structured product markets. The research output will be targeted primarily at serving the needs of financial institutions, government and corporate entities in China and Southeast Asia but will also be relevant for those outside the region. Professor Chin Tiong TAN points out that the setting up of the CCMRC will give SMU an edge in providing insights into the development of Chinese capital market.
SMU and XMU form a natural fit in this joint venture. SMU has a strong research capacity in areas related to various aspects of financial and capital market development and operations, both in the region and globally. Many SMU faculty members are experienced in providing and facilitating research and training that are highly valued by global financial institutions. XMU on the other hand, is known for its impressive research capacity in applied finance it has built up over the past few years. WISE in particular enjoys an enviable reputation of being at the forefront of economic and financial market research in China.Its close links with various government agencies and the capital markets in Shanghai and Shenzhen place it at the unique position of providing valuable insights into the evolution of the Chinese capital markets.
The CCMRC will be headed by Practice Associate Professor Kim Song TAN from the School of Economics. Both A/P TAN and Professor Yiu Kuen TSE(also from School of Economics) have worked closely in the past few months with researchers at WISE and other XMU institutions to help bring the two institutions closer.
