Prof Yongmiao Hong, Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor of WISE was in the top 10 econometrician in accordance with a recent ranking published by prestigious econometrics journal—Econometric Theory.
Econometrician ranking was originated under the proposal of Prof Peter Phillips, one of the best econometricians from Yale University and editor of Econometric Theory. Prof Peter Phillips perceived econometrics as an equally important subject as micro-economics and macro-economics theory; in the research aspect, econometrics methodology has been applied into almost all of the areas in modern economics. This ranking has drawn an overwhelming attention ever since it’s firstly rolled out in 1987. There are three updated version in 1990,1998 and 2003. This ranking has served as an important source to evaluate the recruitment, research projects and research efficiency of a certain institution.
“Econometrician Ranking: 1989-2005” surveyed econometrics paper published in 16 top journals worldwide. These papers are categorized as theoretical econometrics paper and applied econometrics paper and the pages are standardized according to journal’s influence factor. If there are n co-authors, the contribution rate is 1/n; if one author has m institutions’ position, every institution has a 1/m contribution rate. This evaluation system reflects the cooperation propensity in academia field. By norm, author name is listed according to the alphabetic order.
Prof Yongmiao Hong was placed as the 15th econometrician during 1989-2005 and 7th place both in 1995-2005 and 2000-2005. This is the best ranking ever achieved by Chinese theoretical econometrician during the same period.
From the very beginning of its foundation, WISE has aimed at theoretical and applied econometrics excellence and heavily propelled modern economics research and teaching method. WISE has a long-term cooperation relationship with two prestigious econometrics journals: Journal of Econometrics and Econometric Theory. These two journals are quoted as “most heavily publish econometrics paper”. International-oriented system and excellent research atmosphere in WISE has attracted a large amount of top econometricians to pay a visit to Xiamen University, including some of the best scholars. At the same time, WISE employed a batch of theoretical and applied econometricians as full-time professors who all earned their economics PhD degrees from top universities in North America. World-class econometricians, Prof Cheng Hsiao, Prof Chung-ming Kuan and Prof Zongwu Cai, served as Chair Professor in WISE ranging from 1 to 3 months per year. WISE has established its academia reputation in econometrics and is becoming an active player among China and Asia-Pacific institutions. It has the full potential to be a pioneer in economics teaching and research reform at Xiamen University.
