The 2006 International Symposium on Contemporary Labor Economics

The 2006 International Symposium on Contemporary Labor Economics was sponsored and organized by WISE and held on December 16th – 18th, 2006 at Xiamen University. The symposium was focused on Labor Markets Mobilization and Economic Development in a Harmonious Society with particular reference to Chinese labor markets. Among invited speakers and participants were many leading scholars and labor economists from various international institutions including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Southern Methodist University, Cornell University, University of California, University of Southern California, University of Illinois and Brookings Institution, London School of Economics, University College London, University of Southampton, University of Bonn, Uppsala University, Australian National University, Monash University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore and Academica Sinica, etc. and from leading domestic institutions including Chinese Academy of Science, National Bureau of Statistics, Peking University, Renming University, Beijing Normal University, Fudan University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shangdong University, Capital University of Economics and Business, etc. Experts such as Professor Richard Freeman from Harvard University, Professor Jerry Hausman from MIT,Professor Cheng Hsiao from University of Southern California, Professor Bertil Holmlund from Uppsala University, Professor Chung-Ming Kuan from Academia Sinica, Professor Xianchuan Xu from Chinese National Statistics Bureau, Professor John Whalley from University of Western Ontario, Professor Essie Maasoumi from Southern Methodist University, Professor Costas Meghir from UCL, etc. were among the participants. The symposium was aimed to promote recent development in labor economics and microeconometrics, and facilitate research in newly developed Chinese labor economics and labor market. The symposium has been a complete success. Many participants including some high-profiled leading experts paid their tribute to the organizing committee for the success of the symposium.
