On December 13th 2009, the Workshop on New Institutional Economics co-hosted by Ronald Coase Institute and WISE was inaugurated in WISE, Xiamen University. This is the first time WISE incorporate with all experts from the Ronald Coase Institute to discuss related topics since the institute first held this kind of one-week seminar at University of California, Berkeley in 2001.
Founded in 2000, the Ronald Coase Institute is aimed to promote the development and research of new institutional political economics. The institute is named in honor of Ronald Coase, who is the father of this subject. In addition to Prof. Coase, Nobel laureates Kenneth Arrow and Douglass North are also brilliant directors in the board of this institute. The Ronald Coase Institute has been working at encouraging academic improvement of comparative analysis, transnational and multidisciplinary collaboration as well as creating interactive platform for young scholars who have strong interest in this area.
Based on the research papers handed in by applicants, this year the main participants of the workshop are all best chosen young scholars, senior graduates and experts from all over the world. In this seven-day workshop, every attendee has the chance to make two reports about their research. The first speech is held in small scale and specific amendment is proposed by experts and craft brothers. After that, a more formal presentation follows.
Both the Ronald Coase Institute and WISE have gained benefits from this high level workshop, which greatly promoted the academic communications between young and senior scholars. Especially, WISE has expanded its core research fields of econometrics, finance and labor economics to macroeconomics, development economics and etc. Besides, Prof. Ying Fang and Prof. Lei Meng from WISE have been invited to give elaborate reports about their research papers.
