 EGEI - A Joint Master's Degree Program at Xiamen University

Amongst the many international partnerships of the Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE) at Xiamen University, the Economics of Globalization and European Integration (EGEI) programme is one of the most successful.
 

The EGEI Program was established in 1994 by a consortium of European Universities and joined by Xiamen University in 2012. The program currently receives funding from the European Union's Erasmus Mundus Programs. The other eight members who jointly award a master's degree associated with this program are Universiteit Antwerpen (Belgium), Università degli Studi di Bari ‘Aldo Moro’ (Italy), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), Universidad de Cantabria (Spain), Université de Lille 1 (France), Vysoká Škola Ekonomická v Praze (Prague University of Economics) (Czech Republic), Staffordshire University (UK) and Universidade de Brasília (Brazil).

The program schedule is organized over three trimesters. Each semester, students study at a different partner university in a different country. The partner universities act as host institutions according to a rotation schedule. All courses are taught in English and professors from all partner universities act as supervisors and evaluators of the final dissertation. In 2014-2015 academic year, students will study at Staffordshire University (UK), Vrije Universiteit Brussel/Universiteit Antwerpen (Belgium) and Università degli Studi di Bari ‘Aldo Moro’ (Italy). In addition to the core subjects Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics, students have the opportunity to pursue in depth studies in the specific areas of International Trade, Open economy Macroeconomics, Globalization or European Integration.

The objective of the EGEI program is to develop competences in the core subjects of the Program for European and third country economists with career aspirations in universities, government and international organizations, and in research departments of large banks and economic research departments of large industrial or commercial corporations. Third country students especially profit from an increased awareness of the place of the EU in the world economy in general, and with respect to worldwide globalization and international trade in particular.

The EGEI Program is highly desirable for anyone who would like to pursue a master’s degree and gain in-depth knowledge about the economics of globalization. The rotation scheme allows students to experience multiple cultures in various learning environments. Students who partake in this program gain invaluable classroom experiences and a wealth of knowledge surrounding global economies. There are few graduate economic programs in the world that offer such an extensive academic and cultural experience.

As one of the host institutions, Xiamen University inducted 22 students into the program in 2012 and 35 students in 2013.

In addition, from October 19 to 20, 2013, WISE hosted the 4th Antwerp-Lille-Xiamen Workshop in Honor of Wim Meeusen. Researchers from the consortium participated and there were 11 papers presented. WISE was also honored to host a visiting scholar Nebojsa Stojcic from the University of Staffordshire in the 2013 fall semester.
