Guangzhou is the capital and a political, economic, and cultural center of Guangdong Province and is the third largest city in China. A giant metropolis, Guangzhou is home to both gleaming towers and leafy alleys, and its history as a strategic trade port to the South China Sea has afforded it a colonial background and culturally diverse population that combine to give Guangzhou a cosmopolitan flair.

Established in 2015, the Institute for Economic and Social Research (IESR) is dedicated to building a world-renowned research program in applied economics, as well as a leading Chinese think tank. IESR currently includes 27 full-time faculty members of whom 22 obtained their Ph.D. degrees from universities overseas. The institute’s research focuses on empirical work in areas that include labor, education, health, environment, urban and real estate economics.  IESR has its own survey data center which strives to become a leader in the collection, synthesis and analysis of Chinese data.
